SOME PAST ACTIVITIES

1.            International Social Science Research (Ghana and Togo)

We carried out in 2003 an international survey covering Ghana and Togo to gauge the attitude of the populace toward people living with HIV/AIDS. The results of the survey are to guide other organizations and agencies involved in HIV/AIDS work in designing their interventions.

2.            Radio Campaign on HIV/AIDS related Stigma

We have ran a radio campaign in Akan, Ewe, and English on Volta Star Radio FM to create awareness and understanding of HIV/AIDS and remove stigma about people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). The project was carried out with a grant from the Ghana AIDS Commission.

3.            African Consciousness- Sound Values For Just And Equitable Development

Community Action has been actively engaged in the valorisation and promotion of sound African values and the awakening of consciousness as Africans.  Principally, Community Action has been organising events among students for the promotion of these ideals and every year Community Action organises the celebration of Africa Day - May 25.  Through this, it is hoped to reverse the wholesale rejection of sound values like hard work, honesty, which are being lost in most African countries, in the face of the onslaught of excessive materialism and craving for instant riches, and provide an atmosphere to harness the communal concern of the African to achieve an equitable and human centred development of Africa.

4.            Engendering and Strengthening Participation in Democracy and  Governance

From October 2003 to March 2004 we trained the Ho Urban Council, and all Unit Committees (about 600 people) in the Ho Urban area.  The project aimed at engendering democracy and governance by galvanizing the citizenry to remove the gender barriers to participation in public life and to development, while building capacities for participation in governance.

The project has enabled participants to be conversant with the Local Government law and other legislation and regulations under which local governance system works. Participants all came away with a clear realization of the real cost to development of negative gender roles, and with the commitment to work for the removal of gender barriers to participation and development.

5.            Support for Women Candidates for the 2004 Parliamentary Elections

In 2004 Community Action worked with women candidates from different parties in the parliamentary elections to strengthen their capacity to contest effectively. The project built the skills of the candidates (and their campaign teams) to present themselves convincingly and sell their full potential to the voting public.  The project used the Internet to showcase the various candidates and to drum up support for them.

6.            Chiefs Promoting Women’s Rights

We have begun a programme to give women a head start for elections in the 2006 local government elections.  Under this programme we have trained women leaders in the skills necessary to win thee elections; additionally we have engaged with chiefs from the Asogli, Awudome and Hokpe Traditional Councils to lend their support to women’s participation in local government. We will continue this work with the Chieftaincy Institution to review and enhance the roles of women in Community decision making.

7.            Pro-Poor Policy Advocacy

Our concern with equity and social justice is seen in our involvement in efforts to influence the shaping of public policy, and the advocacy we have conducted on behalf of the poor and disadvantaged, particularly in the areas of provision of water, energy, education and health.

8.            Rural Financial Services Project (Government of  Ghana )

We have been engaged since June 2003 as Training Provider by the Rural Financial Services Project to train rural micro-finance institutions. This project is a collaborative effort by the Government of Ghana and some of its development partners and is designed to boost rural financial intermediation.
